Mexican Deacon Ricardo M.Martinez
The past 5 February the church of St. Stephen of the Abissini, the young Ricardo M. Martinez, received the order of the diaconate through the prayer of consecration of Bishop. Lisane Christos Matheos Semahun, eparchy Bahir Dar-Dessie, Ethiopia diocese. The ceremony was held in Rome, Vatican City and approved by Eminence Cardenal Angelo Comastri Vicar General of His Holiness for Vatican City and Cardenal His Eminence Leonardo Sandri, prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches.
The ceremony was attended by several priests and laity of different parts of Italy, the special was attended by the fathers of the Ethiopian College, and the community of the parish Beltiglio in Benevento. Also present was the Ethiopian community residing in Rome in Saint Saviour’s parish, that with their songs and their native language in prayer animated the entire celebration. There were also the seminarians and trainers fathers of Benevento, mates Ricardo, the diocese where he finished his studies.
Ricardo was born June 10, 1984, in Mexico, the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco. The youngest of ten children has always expressed his deep desire to be a missionary. After his secondary education he decided to travel to Italy via a missionary order, already in Italy began his studies in Philosophy and Theology at the Archdiocesan Seminary of Benevento, in one of the theology courses he met Abba Paolo Scarafoni, a priest of the diocese that organizes the University Pastoral Care, and who for many years has organized missions to Ethiopia, especially for the new diocese of Bahir-Dar Dessie, driven by his desire to do missionary experience Ricardo asks to go to Ethiopia with the missionary group of the campus ministry.
Ethiopia has experienced that reality, he met the locals and knew the bishop, and driven by love of God felt the strong desire to return to that land so in need of help but also so full of God. Meanwhile finished his theological studies and is preparing to return to Ethiopia a second time, but for longer, to really know his intentions of the heart and the will of God.
Finally after a very special moment of grace he decides to enter to form part of the new diocese the feast of St. Bartholomew the Apostle of the Latin calendar. Back again in Italy, only to finish his preparations, where he subsequently receive ordination sub-diaconate on 4 December, and some months after that of deacons. And ‘an intense period of preparation and prayer, study of Amarico the mother tongue, and Ethiopian culture. Studies that realizate Eastern University of Naples, with proffesore the Italian philologist Gian Franco Lusini.
Ricardo is very happy with his choice, which he sees as a gift from God, the Ethiopian community that is in Bahir-Dar Dessie, is for Ricardo, her new family that already awaits him, his home, his people for which it is willing to give his life. After the last end of the sixth year of seminary studies, he will return definitively to Ethiopia, to begin his ministry as a member of the new eparchy of Bahar Dar-Dessie.
